The ADS team in Singapore has developed a single phase Brushless DC (BLDC) motor application based on a Cypress PSoC MCU (CY8C21223) for customers in Taiwan. BLDC motors are widely used in industrial applications, home appliances and vehicle systems. Various approaches can be used to drive motors such as specialized motor control ICs or ASICs, MCUs and DSPs.
The customers of the end products target DC fans in server rack cooling application and blower in automotive application.
With the decreasing cost of MCUs and increasing demand for better performance in terms of design flexibility, robustness, IP protection and power consumption, MCUs have become a new force in the mid to low end motor control applications.
The original design adopted by customer could not measure input PWM duty cycle accurately at high operating temperatures. The new design from Avnet solved this issue and was able to achieve better than 1% accuracy over the entire operating temperature range required in the automotive environment.
The great team work between Taiwan FAEs, Sales, PM, Segment Marketing and ADS team in Singapore helped to make the design win of this solution possible. The Taiwan FAEs provided on-site support in a Shenzhen factory during the pilot run and worked closely with Singapore ADS team to resolve issues that came with last minute requirement changes.
The block diagram of the blower solution is depicted below. It consists of the following features:
